2019

AbstractObjective:Food literacy (FL) is a crucial need encompassing basic literacy and fundamental movement skills. The present study aimed to investigate the FL level in pre-schoolers and to evaluate the effect of potential predictors and the associations with gross motor and emergent literacy skills.Design:Cross-sectional study conducted within the Training-to-Health Project.Setting:Kindergartens (n 21) in the Palermo City Council, Italy.Participants:Pre-school children aged 3–6 years (n 921) followed education sessions on nutritional topics, practical activities and compiled prearranged sheets. Creating a bilingual pre-school classroom: the multilayered discourses of a bilingual teacher

2015

Teachers have an agentive role as they interpret, evaluate and develop language policies and practices. In the current study we interviewed a bilingual pre-school teacher in Finland during the first year of implementing a new way of working bilingually with a class of monolingual children. Applying nexus analysis, we explored the teacher discourses on the trajectory of the development of the new approach; the concepts, places and people that were circulating in her reflections; and how these connected with larger societal discourses. The analysis showed that the teacher's new bilingual language practices demanded the renegotiation of previously held personal and professional beliefs. The te…

Physical fitness in relation to later body composition in pre-school children

2019

Objectives Although physical fitness is considered a marker of health in youth, little is known whether physical fitness in pre-school age is related to later body composition. Thus, this study investigated (i) associations of physical fitness at 4.5 years of age with body composition 12 months later and (ii) whether improvements in physical fitness during the 12-month follow-up were associated with changes in body composition. Design This study included 142 children, measured at 4.5 and 5.5 years, from the control group of the MINISTOP trial. Methods Physical fitness (cardiorespiratory fitness, lower- and upper-body muscular strength and motor fitness) was measured using the PREFIT test ba…

PEDAGOGICAL PROCESS FACILITATING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY OF PRE-SCHOOLERS

2019

The research covers analysis of theoretical literature on significance of physical activities in the development of child’s integrity, as it is a well-known fact that child is researcher and his/her activity is manifested through movement. Child gets his first impressions about surrounding world through movement – the more diverse motions are, the more information is acquired, and the more intense is intellectual development thereof. However, quite often pedagogical process does not consider the specific factors facilitating capacity of child’s physical, functional, motion and mental development. To conduct the research, an aim was set to study physical activity of children in pre-school an…
